Philippines

When I go to the Philippines, it’s usually with family. So we will often fly to Manila, then go to Davao where my Gramma is from. Finally, we continue on our final leg to Samal Island where my grandparents currently live.

First, where to stay

  • Chema’s by the Sea (pictured above) is a beautifully designed resort that incorporates lush green plants and vibrant tropical flowers to shade you from the harsh sun rays. Chema’s landscape abuts white sand and crystal clear water where you can reserve a table on the sand, drink local beer and halo halos. The full menu is also served on the beach; however, I would recommend going up to the restaurant to enjoy a different perspective. Accommodations are beautiful bungalows with Filipino decor.
  • Pearl Farm Resort (pictured below, top left) is another gorgeous resort that combines forest and sea. Stay in one of their amazing over-water bungalows that can sleep anywhere from 2-14 people. The resort charters guests to a small island nearby for a relaxing beach day where giant peacocks roam and where guests who choose to be more private can stay. But don’t fall asleep on the beach or you’ll miss your massage in the spa hut right above the water.
  • Hagimit Falls is a great place to spend the day. You’ll walk through a forest of tall, willowing trees until you reach the waterfalls.  There you can picnic and enjoy the calming sounds the element of water provides.

It’s been a while since I’ve visited the islands, so I don’t remember restaurant names; but, eating at the resorts are always fantastic. Here are a list of my favorite Filipino foods to eat in case you are unfamiliar with the local fare:

  • Mango with sticky rice
  • Champorado (Filipino chocolate rice pudding)
  • Longaniza (sausage)
  • Chicken adobo
  • Suman (sweet rice cooked in a banana leaf)
  • Turon (fried banana)
  • Pansit (noodles)
  • Puto (steamed rice dessert)
  • Siopao (steamed bun with meat inside)
  • Lumpia (fried egg rolls)
  • Crispy pata (pork)
  • Halo halo
  • Sinigang (sour soup)

The Philippines was my first international destination at the young age of 2 years old. One of my earliest memories in life was boarding that aircraft, putting my belt on, opening my tray table and looking out the window…so excited for what was yet to come. I remember feeling so small in that chair; boy, have times changed. From that point on, I knew that traveling was something I’d love for the rest of my existence.
